Bergamo, Lomardy, Italy -- July 2006 -- As a young priest, Roncalli served as secretary to the Bergamo bishop and taught at the town's seminary. At the other end of his life, the cardinals elected him pope as he was old and not expected to rule for long--meaning they could get a real pope in a few years. John XXIII changed all that with his Vatican 2 stuff.
