Zagreb, Croatia -- The Tower of Lotrščak dates from the 13th century and adjoined the old town's southern gate. Once this tower held bells that warned when the nearby gate would be closed each night (9 PM in winter; 10 PM in summer.) If you were outside the city when the gates closed, you spent the night beyond the walls. Originally a square Romanesque building with three stories, the tower got a fourth story with windows and frilly eave treatment in the late 19th century.
