[NI0049] ELIZA JANE ALFORD'S obituary, found in a scrapbook at the Otsego Library, newspaper it was published in was not indicated.

Mrs. John MUSSELMAN died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Horace ROOT, of Alamo, February 25, [1901] after an illness of nearly two years, aged 70 years, 3 months and 14 days. Jane E. ALFORD was born in Eromosa Twp, Halton Co, Ontario, November 11, 1830, and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. ALFORD, to Alamo in 1838, and, with the exception of ten years that she resided in Dowagiac she has resided in Kalamazoo Co. March 29, 1850 she was married to John MUSSELMAN, who survives her. To them were born five sons and 3 daughters. The three oldest boys died in infancy. One daughter, Flora CALDWELL, died 15 years ago [circa 1886]. There are four children living, Daniel of Tato [Toto, Starke Co], Ind., William of Otsego, Mrs. Josephine ROOT of Alamo, and Mrs. Marion ULAM of Paw Paw. She also leaves eleven grand children, an aged mother, one brother and three sisters. She was the oldest of a large family of children [14] and, coming here in an early day could tell many interesting stories of her pioneer life. Her father who was a patriot soldier (and son of a Revolutionary soldier) in the war of 1812, died in 1849 leaving his wife alone to bear the burden of rearing their children. The funeral services were held at her late home last week Wednesday at 2:00 conducted by Rev C.E. Deal of Parma.

There were flowers from Mrs. J. CARPENTER and Mrs. J. WHEELER who were friends of her girlhood. Burial was made in Alamo cemetery [Greenbauer] near her old home. The bearers were three grandsons and a nephew.

It seems a matter of interest to many that a person as old as Mrs. MUSSELMAN at her death should have a mother living. Mrs. MUSSELMAN’S mother was born in Ireland of Scotch parents, her father, Patrick McCULLOUGH, being a physician. They came to America when she was 12 years old and two years later she was married to Wm. ALFORD, twice her age, and until his death 20 years later they lived happily. Several years after his death she married John STEWART, who died 12 years ago. She now resides with her son, Wm. ALFORD.

[NI0052] There is a Flora CALDWELL listed in the 1870 index, Kalamazoo Village, Kalamazoo Co, MI census. To date have not had the opportunity to check the census to see if this is my Florance.

Florance "Flora" was living with her Uncle and Aunt, Ora Jay and Adelaide MUSSELMAN-CALDWELL in the 1880 Alamo Twp, Kalamazoo Co, MI census. Her age is listed as 21 years and it appears her last name was CALDWELL at that time.

[NI0053] Danial H. Musselman's Obituary, published in the Starke County Democrat, Knox, Indiana, October 12, 1932, front page (copy).

FORMER SHERIFF MUSSELMAN DIED SUNDAY MORNING

Former County Sheriff Daniel H. Musselman died early Sunday morning at his home near Rye, Indiana (Wayne Twp) following a lingering illness of several months. He had been suffering from ulcers of the stomach and complications.

News of Mr. Musselman’s death was a shock to his host of friends throughout the community. All know that he was in poor health but no one thought that conditions were as serious as they proved to be.

Funeral services were held from the Knox Christian Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock in charge of Rev. Hugh M. Ridlen, pastor of the local Christian Church and interment was made in the Round Lake Cemetery.

Daniel H. Musselman was born near Dowagiac, Michigan, March 23, 1861 and departed this life at the family home near Rye, Indiana, Oct. 9, 1932 at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 16 days.

Mr. Musselman was educated in the public schools of Michigan and continued to live near Dowagiac until 1890 when they moved to Starke County, Indiana, locating on the farm where he lived until his death.

On April 26, 1885 at Cooper (Kalamazoo Co.), Michigan, Mr. Musselman was united in marriage with Miss Anna (Annetta) Lenhart, who preceded him to the Great Beyond on February 18, 1927. Three children came to bless this union, on son who died in infancy and two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Radtke, who also preceded the father in death on October 23, 1931 and Mrs. Ada Schrier, of Kalamazoo, Mich.

Nearly fifty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Musselman moved to Starke County locating on the farm and Mrs. Musselman has taken an active part in the growth and development of the community in which he lived. He was a charter member of the Toto Arbor of Gleaners. For a number of years he served as road supervisor and very efficiently performed the duties of his selection. He was elected, and served as township assessor of Wayne Township, his home community. His services were so satisfactory in this capacity that he was re-elected several times, each time with an increased majority.

In 1924 he was chosen by the Democratic party as their candidate for county sheriff and in the fall election was elected. He performed the duties of this office with credit to himself and was re-elected with increased majority in 1926.

On December 26, 1928, he was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary Dux of Attica, Indiana, with whom he returned to his Wayne Township farm, following the closed of his second term as sheriff of Starke County.

Deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Musselman, on daughter, Mrs. Ada Schrier, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, three grandchildren, Miss Lucille Schrier, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Miss Ellinor Radtke, of Knox and Mrs. Ferne Johnson, of Know; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Ulam, of Almo (Alamo), Michigan, on great grand-daughter, Shirley Ann Johnson, of Knox, other relatives and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.

“Uncle Dan”, as he was familiarly known to his neighbors and friends, was respected and honored by all. His confidence and advise was sought by many. His quiet and unassuming disposition, coupled with his willingness and anxiety to serve wherever possible made for him a large army of friends, who with the family, mourn his departure. He will be remembered for his honesty, integrity and square dealings and his memory will be revered by those whom he assisted. The community will remember him for his official and unselfish service to all. He left the work better than he found it.

Kalamazoo County Marriage Record, book 5, page 204, #2031.
At age 25, b. Dowagiac, William Musselman married Lillie Wood, b. Cooper, 18 years old, both residents of Oshtemo, on October 7, 1892, in Alamo Twp, Kalamazoo Co, MI. Marriage performed by E. Herbert, clergyman. Witnesses: Flora Garrison and M.A. Herbert, both of Alamo. At the time of William’s marriage his profession is listed as farmer. William’s parents are listed as John Musselman and Jane Alford [Lillie's parents were not listed].
------------------------------------

William Musselman’s obituary, published in, probably, the Kalamazoo Gazette, Wednesday, January 2, 1929 edition reads:

W. M. MUSSELMAN, 61, OF OAKWOOD EXPIRES
William M. Musselman, 61, died Wednesday morning at his home in Oakwood following an illness of four years. Surviving are the widow, Lillie [Wood]; a son, Lowell A.; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence W. [Ilona] Holden of Richland, and Mrs. Fred [Almetta] Grinnell of Kalamazoo; a brother, Dan Musselman of Indiana and a sister, Mrs. Minnie [Frank] Ulam of Otsego; four grandchildren.
------------------

Much of the following information was obtained from Charla Marie Kingsbury, great grand daughter of William and Lillie Musselman. Lille Wood was born September 1875, in Michigan. At the time of their daughter’s, Gladys, death in 1910, William and Lillie lived on East Orleans Street in Otsego, Allegan County, Michigan. William owned a shoe repair business in Otsego. They apparently moved from Otsego and lived at 1116 Lake Street (building is still there 1997), Kalamazoo, MI, from around 1916 to about 1925. William’s profession in 1916 was a laborer papermaker at Bryant Paper Mill, in 1919 and 1922 he was listed as an enameler at Michigan Enamel Works. In 1926 William and Lillie lived on the corner of Parkview and Knox, in Oakwood, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan. William helped build the house located in Oakwood. Lillie continued living there after William’s death. She had a gentleman friend that cared for her until her death in 1936, however, his name is unknown.

[NI0055] It is believed Tobias Musse(u)lman married first, Susanna Snyder, probably in Cayuga County, New York and that she was the mother of Tobias' 5 oldest children. Susanna was listed was indicated as the mother of Margaret, and Jacob on their death records.

Tobias Musselman’s Obituary published in the Kalamazoo Weekly Telegraph, Wednesday, November 7, 1883 edition reads:

EAST COOPER. November 5
The funeral of Tobias Mussulman was held at the Congregational church last Tuesday, his home was outside of Cooper, but he was identified here as an old pioneer who lived beyond the allotted time in years, being 82. He was well cared for in his declining years by his son Merritt and family. His daughter, Mrs Smith of St. Joseph and his stepdaughter Mrs. Hopkins of Detroit, came to pay their respects to his remains with the rest at his burial.

An article published in the Kalamazoo Weekly Gazette, Friday, November 9, 1883: Mr. (Tobias) Musselman, an old and respected resident of Alamo, died last Sunday night. His funeral was held at the church at the (Cooper) Center.

To date, no records of marriages have been found nor an obituary for Susanna Snyder or Arminda Johnson.

The spelling Mussulman and Musselman varied by family members.

DIED

Eugene B. Musselman died at his home in Shelby village Sunday April 20 after an illness of over a year, aged 55 years and 8 months.

Mr. Musselman was born at Alamo, Kalamazoo County and came to Shelby about ten years ago. He was an industrious man and of unusual strength and vigor before his constitution was broken by over-exertion, a good citizen and a kind neighbor. He was a member of the Shelby M.E. church and of Shelby Lodge I.O.O.F.

He leaves a wife and five children, Percy Musselman of Homer, Roy, Myrtle, Grace and Hallie of Shelby, a sister Mrs. O.J. Caldwell, of Chase, and a brother Merit (Merritt) Musselman of Plainwell. All except the first named were present at the funeral Wednesday. Other friends present from out of town were Mr. O.J. Caldwell, of Chase, Miss Cora Musselman of Plainwell, Chris Kamhout of Muskegon, and Mrs. Mary Cairnes and Mrs. Nina McLoud of Wayland, the latter two being sisters of Mrs. Musselman.

The funeral was held at the M.E. church, the services being conducted by Rev. S.C. Strickland, the burial rites being performed by Odd Fellows. The funeral offerings from societies and friends were very beautiful testifying to the high regard in which he was held by the people who knew him.

[NI0174] The following is a biography of William Root(s) and Martha Lyons’ son Justus L. (Lyons) Root, published in the Kalamazoo County (Michigan) Portrait and Biographical Record (Page 1141):

JUSTUS L. ROOT. A pleasantly located farm in Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo County, is the home of this well-known farmer, who is engaged in raising such crops as are adapted to the soil and climate and meet the demands of the market. He is the son of William Root, who was born in New York near Long Island, which was also the birthplace of the mother. The elder Mr. Root was a farmer by occupation, and in 1827, removed from the Empire State to Pennsylvania, where he purchased land in Liberty Township, Tioga County. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, in which conflict his brother, Harvey Root, also did valuable service. William Root made his home in Pennsylvania until within three years of his death, when he accompanied our subject to Michigan and died in his eighty-third year.

He of whom we write was born in Chemung County, NY, February 25, 1818 and. in 1840, came West to Barry County, where he made his home for a short time and then located on a quarter section of land in Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo County. Mr. Root is now the only old settler living on the Pottsville Road and has done his fair share in bringing this county to its present state of development. Fair dealing and hard work have brought him success and today he ranks among the well-to-do citizens, while his reputation is that of an honest and industrious man.

The parental family of our subject included seven sons and two daughters, the latter of whom are still living in Pennsylvania and our subject is the only survivor of the sons. He was married when twenty-six years of age to Miss D. B. (Dexcy Betsy) Hardy, the ceremony being performed in 1843 in Pennsylvania. When taking up his abode in Barry County, Mr. Root lived between three tribes of Indians with who he has gone on many a hunting expedition. Deer were very plentiful in that early day, and on one occasion while going after the cows he killed nine of these animals.

To Mr. and Mrs. Root have been born ten children, only three of whom are living, namely; Mrs. Amy Brewster who makes her home in Otsego; Henry Delbert residing in Kansas, and Henrietta A., who lives at home. Their son, Amos, enlisted in the Union Army is 1863, when nineteen years of age, as a member of Company A, Thirteenth Michigan Infantry, which formed a part of the Fourteenth Corps, First Division and Second Brigade, under Sherman, and participated in the battles of Florence, (Ala)., Perryville, (N. C.)., and Savannah, in which latter battle he was taken sick and carried off the field by his comrade, Henry Eastman. He died on a government transport, May 7, 1865, and was buried in the National Cemetery at Philadelphia, Pa.

Mrs. Root departed this life in 1858 and the lady to whom our subject was then married was Mrs. Henrietta (Hardy) Brewster, a sister of his first wife. He is the possessor of a large property, owning eighty acres on section 3, forty acres on section 10, Oshtemo Township; one hundred acres in Adams Township and one hundred and sixty acres in Wexford County, this State. Our subject in order to gain an education walked to school barefooted during the winter months, his parents being too poor to provide him with shoes. He has been the subject of two serious mishaps in his life, at one time falling from a scaffolding, when he was picked up for dead, and in the summer of 1890 he was run over by a self-binding machine. He had three brothers who participated in the War of the Rebellion, who bore the respective names of David H. (Harrison), (Nathaniel) Truman and Lanson.

[NI0288] Ann Musselman’s (Sarah Ann Musselman) death record, in Allegan Co, Volume 3, Page 36, record #12, shows her date of death as January 26, 1903, Plainwell Village. She was 79 years, 4 months and 17 days old at the time of her death. Cause of death is listed as dropsy. She was born in Canada and listed as a housewife. Her parents were listed as John Dessumond [s/b Dunmead], born in Scotland, her mother UNKNOWN.

SARAH ANN DUNMEAD-PETTIT MUSSELMAN'S obituary (copy obtained at the Plainwell Library published in the Plainwell Enterprise of Wednesday, February 4, 1903) reads:

The funeral of MRS. JACOB MUSSELMAN was held from her late home at two o’clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J. Fletcher, officiating.

Mrs. Sara Ann Mussulman was born at Saltfleet, Canada, September 9, 1823, and was therefore 79 years old at the time of her death. She leases (leaves) a husband and six children. She came to Alamo, Kalamazoo Co, about 1869. She was married to Jacob Mussulman on August 6, 1872, and resided at or near Cooper Center until fifteen years ago (circa 1888) when they removed to this village.

Mrs. Mussulman was a woman of good Christian character, quiet and retiring in manner, kind in spirit, and ready to sympathize with and help those in trouble. She was a kind and accommodating neighbor, a faithful wife and mother and a true friend. Although for many years afflicted, she was patient and cheerful, waiting for her Heavily Father’s call to enter into rest. She was tenderly cared for by her husband and other friends, all of whom considered it a privilege to do what they could for her.

[NI0289] The following information was obtained during an interview with Merritt's Granddaughter, Louise Hutchinson-Annis, on May 3, 1997:

Louise recalled Merritt telling how, as a child, he lived in a log cabin. He said it wasn’t unusual to wake up, during the winter, with snow on the blankets and Indians sleeping on the floor in front of the fire place. The Indians would show their appreciation, a day or 2 later, by leaving meat at the front door.

Merritt was a tall, lanky, man who wore a mustache and small beard. His wife, Abby, was said to never to have weighed over a hundred pounds, unless she was pregnant. Merritt was so much bigger than Abby, that she could stand under his raised arm and never touch it.

Merritt and Abby first lived in Alamo Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He purchased the land that had been his parent's homestead. The land is located on 12th Street, near D Avenue. Merritt farmed the land until he moved to Plainwell, Allegan County, Michigan, to a home located on 1st Street, in 1892 (the home is still standing as of 1997). Merritt and Abby’s daughter and son-in-law, Maude and George Hutchinson, lived just across the street from them on 1st street. This was an ideal arrangement, since it allowed Maude and George’s children to see their grandparents almost daily.

Merrit would take a train, with his son-in-law, Geroge Hutchinson, to see his step-siblings (she thought in Detroit), they were artist. It is assumed the step-sibling they went to see was Mrs. Evaline (Eva) Godfrey-Hopkins, the daughter of Arminda Johnson and John Godfrey. No further information is available on Eva at this point in time.

Merritt was a night watchman for the City of Plainwell. During the summer months he and Abby would stay with their daughter, Cora, on her farm located about 2 miles outside of Plainwell, on Riverview Drive. Merritt enjoyed farming and staying with Cora, and her husband, Derk Tolhuizen, afforded him the opportunity to plant and harvest crops.

After Merritt died, in 1925, Cora handled the estate and sold the house, Abby went to live with Cora until her death.

MERRITT ADELBERT MUSSELMAN'S death record, Allegan Co, Volume 5, Page 210, record #6 listed place of birth as MI, his obituary states place of birth as NY. Michigan is CORRECT. Merrit's death record also listed his father's (Tobias) place of birth as NY. All census from 1830 through 1870 state Tobias' place of birth as PA.

MERRITT ADELBERT MUSSULMAN'S obituary, published in the Plainwell Enterprise, January 22, 1925 edition reads:

MERRITT ADELBERT MUSSULMAN was the son of the late Tobias and Arminda Mussulman, born in the state of New York in 1850. He came while young with his parents to Michigan, settling in Alamo where he grew to manhood.

In 1873 he was married to Abbie Montgomery with whom he has enjoyed a happy companionship all the years since. In 1892 they moved to this village (Plainwell) which has since been their home.

He is survived by his widow, and three daughters, Cora, Mrs. D. (Derk) H. Tolhuizen, Cooper; Susy, Mrs. Fred Moore, Buffalo, N.Y.; Maude, Mrs. George Hutchinson, Plainwell. A son Floyd Adelbert, died in infancy. Eight grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Adelaide Caldwell, Detroit.

He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a good neighbor and respected citizen.

In these later weeks of illness his thoughts turned to the future and he made his peace with God and was happy in his Savior.

Quietly he fell asleep to earthly care and pain, to meet the loved ones in that other land where all is love and there is no suffering.

CARD OF THANKS, published in the January 29, 1925 edition of the Plainwell Enterprise, reads:
We desire to thank the friends and neighbors for their help and tokens of sympathy in the sickness and loss of our loved Husband and Father. Mrs. Abbie L. Mussulman and family.

Note: In the January 8, 1925 edition of the Plainwell Enterprise it reads: M.A. Musselman was reported not so well on Tuesday. He is seriously ill with heart trouble.

** Merritt’s Death Record, Vol 5, Pg. 210, Record #6, in Allegan Co, lists his birthplace as Michigan; his obituary stated that he was born in New York in 1850. ..THIS SEEMS UNLIKELY SINCE THE FAMILY CAME FROM NEW YORK IN THE MID 1840’S. The 1860 and 1870 Michigan Census shows Merritt born in Michigan.

[NI0290] ABBIE LOUISE MONTGOMERY-MUSSELMAN'S obituary published in the Plainwell Enterprise dated May 24, 1928) reads as follows:

ABBIE LOUISE MONTGOMERY was born in the state of Missouri, March 1, 1851. During the Civil war, at the death of her mother, her father being in service, she was left in the care of a neighboring family, who broken in fortune came north seeking to secure a new foothold in life and she came with them. They later returned leaving the girl to fend for herself. She was taken in to the home of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Walker, where she was cared for, sent to school and trained in all womanly ways and given the benefits of a true Christian home. There she was sheltered until she married Merritt A. Mussulman, March 16, 1873.

For many years they lived at the old Mussulman home in Alamo, then moved to Plainwell to give their daughters better educational opportunities.
Since the death of her husband, she has lived with her daughters.
After several years of decline and later severe illness she fell asleep May 20, 1928, life’s cares all ended.

A son Floyd died in infancy and she leaves to morn her going three daughters, Cora, Mrs. Richard Tolhuizen of East Cooper, where she passed away; Susy, Mrs. Fred Moore of Buffalo, N.Y. and Maude, Mrs. George Hutchinson, living here, and eight grand children and two great grandchildren by whom she will ever be held in loving remembrance.

The funeral service was held at the home of her daughter in East Cooper Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Walker of the Parchment officiating. A large company gathered to show their love and respect. Burial was at Hillside cemetery by the side of her husband she had loved so well.

Per Louise Hutchinson Annis, Abbie was taken away from the people who brought her from Missouri and given to the Walker family, because the they were using her as child labor.

[NI0291] Cora had no children, but took an active interest in the community. In 1920 she was elected president of the Silver Creek, Parent-Teacher Association.

Cora was a devoted daughter. Her parents, Merritt and Abby Musselman, lived with her during the farming season. After Merritt's death in 1925, Abby went to live with Cora until her death in 1928.

[NI0293] Susie Margaret met Fred Cassidy Moore when he came to Michigan to visit mutual friends.

Susie’s brother-in-law, George Hutchinson, helped build Susie’s and Fred’s house in Alabama, NY.

Susie wrote a society column for the Bativia Daily News. She also made aprons to sell. After Susie’s death, her daughter, Dorothy, gave Louise Hutchinson-Annis the leftover scraps of material. Louise has used this scraps over the years for quilting.

NOTE: The above information was obtained during an interview with Susie's niece, Louise Hutchinson-Annis, also from Joe Cassidy.

[NI0294] The following information was obtained during an interview with Louise Hutchinson-Annis on May 3, 1997:

Louise remembers he mother, Maude, as a very loving person and wonderful parent.

Maude Musselman and George Hutchinson met on a double date that took them, by boat, down the Kalamazoo River. George told his children how he thought Maude was such a beautiful girl. This is proven in a portrait of the Merritt Musselman family, probably taken sometime between 1900-1904.

Maude F. Musselman’s obituary, published in the Plainwell Enterprise June 27, 1929 edition reads:
Maude Mussulman was born in Alamo, November 4, 1885, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. [M.A.] Mussulman. Desiring further educational advantages for their family they came to Plainwell were she has since resided. She was married to George Hutchinson September 26, 1905 and to this union came 5 daughters and one son.
For many years she has been far from well, but her cheery, congenial manner kept it from shadowing the home and her many friends. Recently strength waned and conditions developed showing an operation was the only chance, even if that would avail, to prolong life, this was done and it seemed for a few days she might be spared to her family, but it was not to be, and Saturday evening, June 22, 1929, just as the sunset rays gilded the western skies she fell asleep, leaving a vacant place in the home circle only the mother can fill.

She leaves to mourn her going her husband, five daughters, Mrs. Glenn McPeck of Silver Creek, Evelyn, Loraine, Louise, Jeanie and one son, Jack, living at home, also two sisters Mrs. Cora Tolhuizen, East Cooper and Mrs. Susie Moore, of Buffalo, NY, besides her many other relatives and friends.

She was a faithful member of the Rebekah Lodge, a kind neighbor and will be greatly missed from her accustomed places. A large company of mourning relatives and friends gathered at her late home on 1st Avenue, Plainwell Tuesday, June 25 to pay their last respect for their late member.
Services were conducted by Rev. O. E. Kendall of the Baptist church. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery.

[NI0295] Derk was a partner in the Tolhuizen & Mercer Hardware Store, located on Burdick Street, in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

OBITUARY OF THE MRS CHARLES RADTKE

In the community in which she was born, reared and lived all her life, Mrs. Charles Radtke was beloved by all who knew her, and her sudden passing on Friday morning came as a distinct shock to a legion of friends. Cheerful, kindhearted, affectionate to family and friends, interested in community affairs, a willing helper in time of need. Mrs. Radtke had a definite place in the life of the community and had earned for herself the enviable reputation of living in the fullest sense, the splendid life of a good woman, a staunch friend and a kind, friendly neighbor.

Her life was devoted to her family, and their affairs and wishes were of prime importance to her. She was a devoted, loving wife, a wise, judicious mother, a dutiful daughter and reared to splendid young womanhood, two fine daughters, who with t heir father and the other immediate members of the family are now bowed in deep sorrow at the affliction that has befallen them at her death. This noble woman has left to her family a glowing heritage of good deeds performed during her lifetime, and her taking away in the very prime of life has left a vacancy that can never be filled.

Mrs. Radtke was a member of the Round Lake Ladies Aid Society and active and interested in all things promoted by this organization. She was also a member of the Ancient Order of Gleaners and had served as secretary of the Toto Arbor for several years.

Blanche Musselman, eldest daughter of Dan H. and Annette Musselman, was born in Wayne Township, Starke County, Indiana, on March 24, 1887 and departed this life at LaPorte, Indiana, on October 23, 1931, aged forty-four years, six months and twenty-nine days. She was educated in the schools of Starke County, where she grew to womanhood. On June 18, 1908 she was united in holy matrimony with Charles H. Radtke, a childhood playmate. To this union were born two daughter, Ellinore and Mrs. George Johnson. Surviving Mrs. Radtke are the husband, the two daughters, one granddaughter Shirley Anne Johnson, the father, Dan H. Musselman and one sister, Mrs. Ada Schrier, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, besides a wide circle of relatives and friends.

An article published about Gene Kamhout, after his death:

A FRIEND
All of Shelby – those who knew him and those whose lives have been affected because a man like Gene Kamhout lived in Shelby, are thankful for his life.

Seldom does one have the opportunity to know and call a man of his stature, a friend.

He brought more pleasures and common-sense thinking to his farming personnel, his coffee friends and lodge acquaintances than will ever be known.

Gene had a God given talent, and he used it, for bringing humor out of any situation. You couldn’t leave his presence without a smile, either on your face or shining inside.

All of us who call this area home are thankful for the life of Gene Kamhout.

John Fox family, published in the Oceana History, Vol. I, submitted by Beatrice Kamhout.

JOHN FOX
John and Emma Fox came from White Cloud, MI to Shelby in the 1880’s.

John went into the livery business on Main Street and began to serve the people of Shelby. His sons, Archie and Ray, joined the business. Mr. Fuller, the undertaker kept his horses and the hearse there. Salesmen were met at the train station and taken to other towns with their wares. To keep them warm, the livery furnished bear skin coats, robes and soap stones. Buggies were used in the summer. It closed in 1910.

The Fox family moved to a farm on the south end of Shelby, where they farmed and established a milk route, serving the people for many years. The chores of milking, straining, cooling and bottling were done twice a day - pints cost three cents and quarts six cents. Twice a day the horse, Bay Billy, was hitched to a light wagon. John with the help of younger boys Nick, Neil, and Frank made the runs to homes. Archie and Ray’s children as they grew older helped with this chore.

Neil left home with a medicine wagon that came through Shelby. They sold Kemps Balsom Cough Syrup and Raccoon Corn Plasters. He went to Bangor, Maine where he traded his horse for a truck. Then he started a dray business. As his business grew, his nephews, John, Hubert, and Alfred went to help him. John returned and settled in Muskegon. Hubert and Alfred remained in Maine.

Neil married and had two sons.

Nick stayed in Shelby and went into farming. His farms grew and his business grew to become N.J. Fox & Sons. Frank served in World War I. He married and lived in Three Oaks most of his life. Their son Jim served as Methodist Minister in Shelby in the 1970’s.

Archie and Hollie (Hallie) [Musselman] Fox moved to a farm in 1920. In 1942 fire destroyed their home. They moved to Muskegon and he worked at Sealed Power.

Ray and Caroline took up a homestead in 1910 at Havre, Montana. In 1921 they returned to Shelby. He helped John and Emma on the farm and dairy until they died in 1930. Ray took over the farm, and became a fruit farmer. They moved to the original Fox home, where they lived. Later they built a new house.

Edith and Ann went to college and became teachers. Ann taught in Toledo, Ohio until she died in 1959. For a few years Edith taught at Crystal Lake, riding to school on horseback, her outfit was a leather split skirt, which she changed at school. She went to Bakersfield, California where she taught until she retired and moved to Florida. She also wrote books for children and then novels. She died at the age of 97.

The end of the 2nd generation came in 1982 when Nick and sister Edith died within 4 days of each other.

[NI1656] Obituary of Annette Lenhart Musselman, published in the Starke County Democrat, Knox, Indiana, Wed., February 23, 1928 (copy).

OBITUARY OF MRS. DAN MUSSELMAN

The entire community was shocked and saddened Friday afternoon when word reached here that Mrs. Dan Musselman had passed away at the St. Joseph Hospital in South Bend at two o’clock hat afternoon. Mrs. Musselman had been in the hospital just one week, having submitted to a mastoid operation the Saturday previous. All during the long week, while Mrs. Musselman suffered intensely, her loved ones hovered near her hoping against hope that her condition would change for the better and that she would come once more to take her place in the happy family circle over which she had presided for so many years. But God who know(s) best, took her Home and gave her a place among his fairest blossoms. For over forty years, she had been a devoted, faithful wife, a wonderful, loving mother, a cheerful, self-sacrificing neighbor, and she will be greatly missed by hundreds of friends all over the county. She was ever ready and willing to do her best and give her all in any cause that would benefit her neighbors, friends or the community in which she lived. She was an earnest, sincere Christian, with a kind word for everyone and charity in her heart for all. She was a member and ardent worker in the Round Lake Ladies Aid and the Ladies Aid of the Methodist Church in Knox.

Annetta Lenhart Musselman, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Lenhart was born in LaPorte County, Indiana, September 11, 1866 and departed this life at South Bend, Indiana, February 18th, 1927 at the age of 60 years, six months and seven days. On April 26, 1885 she was united in marriage with Daniel Musselman at Kalamazoo, Michigan. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Blanche Radtke of Toto, Mrs. Ada Schrier of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Jacob, who died in infancy. The daughters with the heartbroken husband and four grandchildren are left to mourn her loss. Mr. and Mrs. Musselman moved to Starke County, west of Rye in the Fall of 1885 and have resided in this community continuously since that time.

Funeral services were conducted at the late home on Sunday afternoon at two o’clock in charge of an old friend of the family, Rev Herman Beauchamp, pastor of the United Brethren Church of South Bend. Misses Dorothy and Ruth Wiedergott sang several favorite hymns of Mrs. Musselman’s. Burial was in Round Lake Cemetery.
